Hall sticks or magnetic sticks are relatively new. Unlike original analog sticks, these sticks do not work via friction. Hall effect sticks operate with a small chip and a magnet. This chip can detect magnets and determine their attractive force; it is attached to the side of the sticks (inside/not visible). Next to the chip sits a small magnet connected to the stick. When the analog stick is moved, the axis on which the magnet is mounted rotates, causing it to move towards or away from the chip. The chip then calculates the position of the analog stick and transmits this information to the controller.
